Ron Paul had run a fantastic campaign. He has a broad based volunteer support, folks from all demographic, a lot of money. But it is alright now to talk about the campaign in past tense. There is one thing that Ron Paul can accomplish as part of his campaign of freedom, liberty and the rule of law.
12 senators voted to support immunity for telecom companies. An immunity for crimes that may or may not have been committed. Because of the immunity, you will never know if the telecom companies shared all of your private data and communications with the administration. There is a fair way to proceed; that is to let the FISA court rule on the legality of what the companies and the senate would not need no discuss immunity. Or deny immunity and let people take the companies to court and fight out any legal issues.
Here is the irony of what the administration says: The administration says everything the companies did was legal. yes legal. But, the administration is asking the senate to give them immunity. immunity against what? doing something legal?
Here is the cruelty of what the administration is going to do: the FISA law expires end of this month. The president will not extend the current law until the existing FISA bill with immunity is passed. So the administration needs FISA to protect the country. They cannot accept to extend it without the immunity provision. So between the immunity for telecom companies and protecting the country, they have chosen immunity for the telecom companies.
If Ron Paul is keen on a campaign around rule of law, this is one place he and his supporters could leave a big mark on. question is will he?
